Sorrento, Italy

Sorrento is near Naples.

We flew into Aeroporto di Napoli, on Wednesday.  During World War II this airport was used by the United States Army Air Forces during the Italian Campaign. The Air Transport Command used the airport as a major transshipment hub for cargo, transiting aircraft and personnel.  My uncle, Bob Smith, flew C47s for the Air Transport Command and was killed as he was evacuating wounded soldiers from Italy to North Africa, so I suspect that this was the airfield he left from.  Sad day in our family.  For a brief story about him, see WW II Memorial, and search Smith, Robert from Madison, WI.

The main reason for coming to Sorrento was for me to buy some inlays for my woodworking.  Jeanie was able to speak enough Italian for us to find a shop where we could accomplish that.  Since we had been to Mt. Visuvious, Pompeii and the Isle of Capri before, we took a bus tour around Sorrento for site seeing this time.  Here are some pictures:

Jeanie on the roof of Hotel Elios, our hotel in Sorrento, right on the Mediterainian.  Very nice small hotel with a nice view of the sea.

Our hotel overlooked the Mediteranian, and this is the Isle of Capri.

Here's the shop where we bought the inlays.

Here's an inlay.

If you've ever been to Italy, you know about gelato, the Italian version of ice cream.  It is made with a different recipe, and contains less air than ice cream, so the flavors are more intense.  Here a some pictures:

Yummy!

Jeanie spent time today practicing her Italian with Giuseppe, the husband of Gianna who runs the hotel. She was happy, and I worked on the computer.  Much easier on the pocket book, although Italy is much less expensive than France.
