Condove

We arrived by train in Condove, Italy, on Saturday, and are staying with Bianca and Alberto Perino.  Jeanie met them when she was in Italy with the 3 kids in 1980.   On Sunday, May 16, and we climbed the nearby mountain to see the Sacre di San Michele, which was built in 1000 A.D.  Here are some pictures:

That's Jeanie on the trail.  It is an old mule trail that was used to haul materials to build the church.  How's that for a big job?

The climb was about 500 meters in elevation, and about 6 km. in length.  The climb up was easier than the trip down.  The rocks in the trail were uneven, and it was hard to keep balance.  Glad we did it this year, rather than waiting a few more years.

Alberto drives a natural gas powered Fiat.  He says gas is available locally, but most people still use petro.  Maybe that's the wave of the future.  It says natural power on the rear of the car.

There is a hot issue here in Condove, and it involves a proposed high speed rail line from Tirino to Lyon, France, called TAV.  The residents of the Susa Valley, including Condove, have been fighting the construction of this line for 20 years, for environmental reasons.  Alberto and Bianca are actively involved in the issue.  In fact, Alberto went to a meeting on the subject this morning in Torino.  It will be coming to a head soon, so we'll see what happens.  More at http://www.ambientevalsusa.it.  Lots of signs saying "No TAV".
