Buzan

We took an overnight train from Condove, Italy, to Toulouse, France, and then a series of trains, a bus, and a taxi to arrive at Castillon en Couserans, France. Castillon is in the Pyrenees Mountains and is the closest town to Buzan that has accommodations. We stayed at the Le Clos Enchante', which is run by the Peat family. Gite is the French word for a shelter or hostel. We had a living room, kitchen, two bedrooms and a bath. Very nice, and the Peats were very friendly and helpful. See Jonathan's Tours B&B.  We recommend it highly.

The first two pictures are the front and back of the gite and the third is the Peat family. Jonathan has a big garden, and they shared vegetables with us. They bought this old house about 2 years ago, and have been fixing it up ever since. He also guides tours in the Pyrenees and in Greece. His father was Greek and his mother Scotish, but Myriam is French. So, multi lingual!

This is the church in Buzan, but they haven't had a priest for 2 years. Jeanie used her iPod Touch to show pictures from 1961 and 1980. This woman in the wheelchair is the daughter of a family that Jeanie knew in 1961. Next is Roland Raou, wife Celine, and son Michele, along with Jeanie and me. Jeanie has corresponded with Roland since 1961, and today they shared old memories. We ate Sunday dinner with them, which turned out to be a 4 hour, 7 course dinner, and a couple hours of picture sharing. None of them speak any English, but Jeanie managed to keep the conversation going for 6 hours. Wow!

That's John in the sleeper on the train, and then Michele, Celine, and Roland Raou with the first course of the dinner. Next is the "thousand layer" cake for desert.

That's Jeanie showing pictures on the iPod Touch to Robert Estrade. He's married to the grand daughter of a family Jeanie knew in 1961. He is fixing up their old family house, which is abandoned now. Huge job! The town is being gradually replaced by people that use the houses for summer retreats. There are only 15 year round residents left, but more summer residents.
On Sunday evening, we went to a folk dance in Bordes Sur Lez, a small town 2 km from Castillon. As usual, all the men wanted to dance with Jeanie. I'm still waiting for a woman to ask me to dance.

This is the town cemetery, where many of Jeanie's former friends now reside.
